Maine Law is fortunate to have a good working relationship with an agency that is devoted to law student education and also heavily recruiting them for jobs. Among the initiatives at the Center for Law & Innovation is our participation in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office's Pilot Certification Program as one of only three law schools in the nation certified in both patents and trademarks. We also regularly send student to participate in the PTO's expanding summer externship program. USPTO Director David Kappos has visited the Maine Law campus twice in two years (2010 and 2011) and we are working closely with the agency on such issues as improved communication with law students seeking employment opportunities, pro bono patent assistance, and legal education for patent examiners.
